Baptism River High Falls

brhf05-tmbThe Baptism River High Falls is located within the Tettegouche State Park which requires a State Park Permit for entry. A daily permit can be purchased for a nominal $5. But the better option is to purchase a yearly vehicle permit for $25. A year-round permit provides unlimited access to all 72 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase. See Minnesota North Shore State Park Guide for more info.

Visiting the Baptism River in late winter or early spring provides views of heavy water flow and ice buildups which are constantly changing as the snow and ice starts melting upstream. Hiking along the trail from the Visitors Center parking lot can be quite treacherous as the trails are typically covered with ice and snow this time of year. We have found the use of "Yaktrax" to be very useful to reduce slipping especially on icy slopes. See following images of the Yak Tracks attached to my wife's hiking boots. The stainless steel bands on the bottom dig into and hold on the icy pathways and are easy to install and remove. See Yaktrax for more information.

Visiting the High Falls offers the visitor the option of crossing the Baptism River via the suspension bridge. The bridge provides great views of the river both upstream and downstream.

Visiting Tettegouche State Park in the early spring should include a trek to the mouth of the Baptism River where it flows into Lake Superior. The river flows swiftly as it carves it's path through the river rock along its way to the lake. Occasionally large chunks of ice can be found along the river rock as remnants' of the winters ice buildups along the shores of Lake Superior.
